53 man roster projection (Training Camp edition)
The Miami Dolphins Report for training camp July 28 and is our way too early projection for the 53 man roster:
QUARTERBACKS (3): Blake Bortles, Brett Hundley, Brandon Allen (Cut: Sean Renfree)
The battle between Allen and Renfree in training camp will be interesting. Renfree is the veteran of this group but Allen offers the potential of having the future back up QB to Bortles.
RUNNING BACKS (5): Latavius Murray, Ameer Abdullah, Kenyan Drake, Kelvin Taylor, Dan Vitale (Cut: Tommy Bohanon, Storm Johnson, Brandon Wilds)
This will be a young and explosive group if all three rookies make the team. Expect Tommy Bohanon to battle the versatile Vitale for the last spot.
WIDE RECIEVERS (5): Julio Jones, Keenan Allen, Willie Snead, Josh Huff, Adam Humphries (Cut: Aaron Burbridge, Rannell Hall, J.J. Worton, Jake Kumerow, Mekale McKay, Cayleb Jones)
The first four (Jones, Allen, Snead, and Huff) can be written in stone. Snead has blossomed from practice squad player to a legitimate down field threat. While Huff has failed to make an impact at wide out, he’s made his mark in the return game. Keep your eye on Jake Kumerow, he could be this year’s Willie Snead, and will push Humphries and Burbridge for the final slot.
TIGHT ENDS (3): Jimmy Graham, Richard Rodgers, Luke Willson (Cut: Cole Wick)
Cole Wick is an interesting prospect but his only chance of finishing above the cut off is injury.
OFFENSIVE LINEMEN (10): Joe Thomas, Andy Levitre, Morgan Moses, James Stone, A.J. Cann, Rob Havenstein, Darryl Williams, John Urschel, Max Garcia, Germain Ifedi (Cut: Alex Redmond, Jake Brendel, Malcolm Bunche, Ross Burbank, Trip Thurman, Tyler Johnstone)
Miami has been working to reshape their line via the draft and more than half have been draft in the last two years. Joe Thomas was brought in at the deadline last season to anchor the line.
DEFENSIVE LINEMEN (9): Star Lotulelei, William Gholston, Devin Taylor, Gabe Wright, Caraun Reid, Jordan Phillips, Anthony Zettel, Jihad Ward, Jonathan Bullard (Cut: Greg Hardy, Giorgio Newberry, Joel Heath, Nile Lawrence-Stample, Deonte Gibson)
The defensive line was an area of emphasis for Miami this draft using early picks on Ward and Bullard. Greg Hardy won’t make the cut until he finds a suitor in the NFL.
LINEBACKERS (6): Luke Kuechly, Lamarr Houston, Barkevious Mingo, Vince Williams, Deiontrez Mount, Joshua Perry (Cut: Tony Steward, Kevin Snyder, Tyriq McCord, James Burgess, Cory Littleton, Ian Seau)
Mount has the inside track on the final LB but Kevin Snyder is a name to watch and fans would love to see something from Seau.
DEFENSIVE BACKS (10): Sam Shields, Morgan Burnett, Antoine Bethea, Kemal Ishmael, Kareem Jackson, Demarious Randall, A.J. Bouye, Terrance Brooks, KeiVarae Russell, Deon Bush (Cut: Blidi Wreh-Wilson, Terrance Mitchell, Mohammed Seisay, Jacoby Glenn, Elijah Shumate, DeAndre Elliott, Trae Elston)
Wreh-Wilson and Mitchell might find themselves on the outside looking in at the moment but it wouldn’t be a surprise to see their names included in the final 53 with a strong camp.
SPECIALISTS (2): Ryan Succop, Sam Martin (Cut: Marshall Morgan, Will Monday)
There will be a kicking battle in camp between Succop and rookie Morgan. May the best kicker win but our odds are on the vet.
