Possible Basic Cap Structure

Post by Nathan S. »

Well here is my effort, just something to use to possibly get this started or make adjustments too.

2010-2011 Salary Cap
- $58,044,000

Some info...
- Is a soft cap - you can sign players that are on your team to put you over the cap. You cannot sign players not on your team to put you over the cap.
- Can only use MLE when your team is above the cap to start FA. MLE is used on players that aren't apart of your team. (Also you can break the MLE into parts for multiple players if you wish.)
- Larry Bird Exception - Teams can re-sign their own players (if player was on team for 3 years) even if they are over the cap as long as they follow min/max salary rules.
- You cannot sign other players than your own to go over the cap.
- 12 players must count towards cap - if you are under then 473K is counted towards the cap for each open roster spot.
- Teams under cap can take on more salary then sent out in trades.
- Trade exemptions are only good for 1 year.
- Teams can sign their first round draft pick to the rookie scale even if makes them go over the cap or even if they are already over the cap.
- Teams can sign a player to a minimum contract for up to two years to go over the cap of if they are already over.

Luxury-Tax Threshold
- $70.307 million

Maximum Contract Numbers
- $13.604 million for players with zero to six years of experience
- $16.324 million for players with seven to nine years
- $19.045 million for players with 10-plus years in the league

Also found this...
Max contracts scale based on years of service in the league. There are 3 seperate ranges:

- players with 0-6 years in the NBA can sign for a maximum of 25% of the cap
- players with 7-9 years in the NBA can sign for a maximum of 30% of the cap
- players with 10+ years in the NBA can sign for a maximum of 35% of the cap

Midlevel Exception
- $5.765 million

ALSO - good read on explaining the cap... - http://sonsofsamhorn.net/topic/58299-nb ... s-payroll/

Two other exceptions you might want to include are the rookie and min contract exceptions.

-Teams can sign their first round draft pick to the rookie scale even if makes them go over the cap or even if they are already over the cap.

-Teams can sign a player to a minimum contract for up to two years to go over the cap of if they are already over.

Also you can break the MLE into parts for multiple players if you wish.

I think the only thing we need is a maximum cap number. because really, we aren't affected by being over the luxary tax, since we can't be taxed, unles troy decides that everyone has to "donate" if they are over the luxary tax threshold. which would be an intereting thing to do.

I disagree there should be options for going over the cap just like in the NBA. They have special rules for it to sign players to go over the cap and I think that should be an option here in this league also. Now how we go about implementing it that is another question all together.

Unlike real life there would have to be a disavantage for going over the cap. If we can find something that affects the sim team then i say let's keep the rule. If not, then we prob need to stick to a hard cap.

I would agree completely, but there has to be a way we can corporate:

Mid lvl exception and Larry Bird Exception as they are important part of the NBA.

i meant the luxury tax, not the cap line, as something that you punish people for going over. since teams go over that in real life, they are taxed, and it affects their profitablility. but since this is all simmed, we dont make money from out attendence. we need to find some kind of hard maximum cap. which could be the 70 million of the luxury line. it could be 75 million. it could be 80. i know when i play nba 2k i cant sign players when i have committed so much money to my team. i think it might be something liek 80 million. i believe in a soft cap, and it could work, it would tell us whihc teams can sign FAs and etc etc, but for this league to work, we need to have a maximum cap number. whether we do end up taxing team with "donations" for going over the luxury tax, or we make 70 million the high cap no oen can go over, we just gotta figure that out.

now after i typed all that, i found this website.
http://hoopshype.com/salaries.htm

which has all the team payrolls. only 3 teams are over 80 million total, and only 8 teams are over the luxury tax, so setting a hard cap of 70 or 75 or 80 million would work out fine. look at the lakers, 90 some million, but they could trim 14 million off their payroll if they didn't have bums like walton, vuvjeick, and blake.

my opinion, have the cap, of 55 mil or whatever it is. but have a cap ceiling of like 70 to 75 million. thats enough if you can field a good team. i think 80 is pushing it, but its possible. yes, it would affect the MLE, and resigning players if you are already over, but as GMs, we would have to be creative some way without a penality of luxury tax. if you set the ceiling at 75 million. say your the spurts (15th in payroll) you have 65 million. you get 2 years of MLE.

its tough, ii know, but we gotta figure something out.

So the $58,044,000 soft cap and then a 75 or 80 million hard cap? I think that'd work cause there isn't anything we can do about taxes.
