With all of the other issues, we won't be changing our grading system quite yet. For free agency and LTC and other decisions that may be impacted by grades, know that the grades in the system now reflect where Madden grades were at the end of the season. In a couple months when new grades come out, there may be big changes for some players as there are every year. So, as always, decisions based upon early off-season grades must consider that big grade updates will be coming before the season and grades will continue changing throughout the season and a player's career.

This season there may be bigger grade updates as discussed in this thread. My inclination is to keep things based upon Madden as a grade floor, so you know their grade will be at least that, but work out a boost for players graded higher by PFF. As we wade into this new ground, it may be a limited boost initially this first season until we get more experience with things to adjust in future seasons.

So keep that in mind with any early off-season decisions. Grades now are last season's grades and do change. Madden releases new grades prior to the regular season (as well as updating many of them weekly), and we'll also have some new grade factors this season likely from PFF consideration giving some players a little extra boost.
As mentioned, we'll be looking at enhancing our grades this season. I now have a PFF subscription and have been looking at grades and ways to broaden our player grade values.

Since this is the first year, I don't want to do anything drastic. I originally mentioned using Madden grades as the floor so every player will at least get that as their grade. The only grades we'd adjust from there would be players with much higher ratings on other grading systems like PFF.

I'm open to ideas, but for a small step maybe something like this...

These are our current grade breakdowns:

A+ : M 98-99
A : M 93-97
B+ : M 88-92
B : M 80-87
C+ : M 70-79
C : M 60-69
D+ : M 50-59
D : M 40-49
F : M 0-39

For proposed PFF adjustment:
A+ players: no adjustment, already top grades and we don't adjust down from Madden.
A & B+ players: +1 max adjustment up if PFF overall grade higher.
B & C+ players: +2 max adjustment up if PFF overall grade higher.
C-F players: +3 max adjustment up if PFF overall grade higher.

So for some examples, Wyatt Teller is 89 in Madden and 92.3 in PFF. As a B+ player (89), he'd go up a max of 1 to 90 in our sim.

For a B rated example, Garett Bolles is 84 (B) here now but 90.6 PFF so he could go up a max of 2 to 86 in our sim.

For lower rated players who could move up a max 3 points, I think you may see a mix of the most justice along with perhaps some odder upgrades involving players with less playing time perhaps but maybe a good PFF grade on short samples. An example is WR Tyrie Cleveland at 62 and 76.2 PFF, so he'd probably go up 3 to 65. Big grade difference, but only caught 6 passes last year in NFL. Center Andre James is 59 and 60.0 PFF so could move up a max of 3 but would just move up 1 to 60 here.

Any thoughts on incorporating PFF differences in a small first step where it adjusts the players the most who have the lower grades (and in some cases perhaps less deserved if PFF has much higher) and higher graded players could also move up but to a lesser degree.

The thinking is that we might not update grades every week, but perhaps every 4 weeks (4 times throughout the season) and it would be more comprehensive grade based upon multiple sources rewarding players with higher overall grades in PFF than Madden. I'm a little new to PFF, but It wouldn't be a weekly game PFF grade we'd go off, but a player's overall grade.

I want to look at the data more. Might be that we could just say +3 max adjustment for anybody with higher grade in PFF, but just worry without a lot of history/knowledge of PFF grades that we don't have too large of an adjustment this first season while observing if it was a positive change and if we should enhance it further ahead.

Troy, I like the idea of easing into this and I'm supportive of the proposal you've outlined. The only thing I would add is that I think if we're going to adjust grades upward, we should also adjust player grades downward. I'm okay if that is not rolled out initially though. Maybe it's something we can look at implementing for next year?

Yeah, that's possible. Since this is our first grade change, I didn't want to do too much for those who've relied upon Madden grades giving us our values for their sim roster decisions. As we experience a small change this first year and get to know PFF grades a bit more throughout a year of experience, I could definitely see us expanding the grade impact in future seasons. Possibly both up and down, and possibly a larger adjustment in future seasons depending upon how things go with small step first.

I like the idea of your Madden/PFF grading system but I'm not a fan of only updating once a month. I think doing the PFF adjustment once a month would work but we at least need a Madden update every week. Just like in the NFL players improve or decline on a weekly basis so for the sake of competition they should here to. Also there is way to many examples though out each season of free agents and practice squad players with no player rating being signed in season. Seems crazy to have to wait a month for a player rating especially if you have injuries.

I'm for change on the grading system, but it seems like a lot of work for troy, don't want to overwhelm at all. What if each owner submitted PFF grades weekly, would that help in any way? Just a thought. PFF is very quick in upgrades. Finally, I think quarterly is optimal because it gives a better barometer on a players performance, especially for rookies whose performance tends to vary more up and down than a veterans would.

Not everyone has a PFF subscription so they wouldn't be able to see or submit those unfortunately. I don't think you can even see an overall score on every player, and without a subscription I know you can't see the sub-category ratings. For example, you might see an OL overall rating, but not his PBK or RBK. Sometimes you see nothing at all I believe.

I have the PFF Edge account, $39.95 per year, got some access but not everything. I can get the ratings of players for the current year and past years, but I don't have all the bells and whistles of an elite account, and sure not paying $200 a year

I had the edge and when they ran a 30% off I upgraded. Being a numbers guy and bored (retired) I really enjoy it

Per the off-season rules discussion about incorporating PFF grades to boost up players they had higher than Madden, but keeping everyone at least at the Madden grade, I've updated the impacted players. There were 221 that qualified as far as having both a Madden and PFF, with the PFF higher. Depending upon the madden grade, those players would get up to a 1-3 point boost if their PFF score was higher. It doesn't format great, but below is a table of the impacted players who got a 1, 2 or 3 point boost with a higher PFF grade. For PFF grades, we're using OFF for offensive players and DEF for defensive player PFF grades and pulling them from the overall team roster showing those grades.

Let me know if you think you have a player who should have been boosted (based upon madden and pff off/def grades) that we didn't get.

I understand the concern about not updating grades as much possibly by making this more comprehensive and coming from multiple grade resources. I can't really just do madden weekly and PFF monthly, as the grades for many are some mix of those so updating one without doing both at the same time doesn't make sense to know if it's just a madden base being updated or a pff boosted grade to not adjust until we do pff again. Madden added a whole bunch of new grades for lower-ranked guys recently, so those were adjusted. I think it would be rare that a team here desperately needs someone to get a grade that madden didn't have before but does before we'd update our grades again that would actually impact their strength averages (as most of those would be low-graded players)... but if a team here does have a player that we don't have a madden grade for but is publicly listed on their grade site, just let me know anytime and I'll update that to give them their madden grade base if we have it at zero.

For all other players with existing grades, we'll update using these multiple sources at least every four weeks (4 times a season). Possibly more if I can make it more efficient, but both sites (especially madden) have made it difficult. Last year I had some help with someone who generated a spreadsheet for me using developer tools. Not sure if I'll have that or not, but even if it's as I got them so far this season it's doable but helpful to sanity to not have to constantly do all that every time we sim games but instead just every couple of weeks. Also will make simming the games faster to cut that most time consuming process out of it every single week.

So hopefully better all around. Better grades using more resources and faster sim results most weeks.
